Day 3 . Exercising

I want be healthy, but...

I have two babies under the age of 2.5
I teach natural childbirth classes every week
I clean and maintain our house, kitchen, and laundry
I have to drop off the recycling
I cloth diaper 
I keep track of our expenses, bills, and budgeting
I stay at home
I am saving for our new house
I am breastfeeding

Those are my excuses.
Those are my excuses as to why, for the last 6 months, I've neglected my health. I've neglected regularly exercising and I've neglected proper nutrition. You know the worst part about those excuses? The worst part is that until I let them go, I will never be able to fully fulfill these:

  • Being a good example for my family
  • Feeling good about myself
  • Having confidence
  • Appreciating the health/body God has given me
  • Being healthy
  • Feeling accomplished
  • Being an example for my students
  • Having more energy

Those are my reasons, my purpose, my intention for changing. There is really nothing deep or fancy about it. If you have the physical ability to exercise, you should.

I always feel better when I am exercising regularly. I always have more energy. 


"But I'm busy. How can I find the time?" If there is one thing I've learned numerous times in my life it's this:

You'll find time, if you make time.

I can make time to sit and read blogs and watch endless hours of TV every night. If I make it a priority, I can find time.


So. Yesterday we started our family membership here.


And I worked out. For the first REAL time since April.
And I will continue to from now on (a minimum of 3x/week). I might only get in 20 minutes, I might get an hour (I learn yesterday that, as I anticipated, my wonderful 9 month old was less than thrilled to have mom leave, not to mention with a stranger in a strange place), but something is better than nothing and you have to start somewhere.

I'll talk about exercising (and nutrition) a few times this month as I get into the groove of things.

What are your excuses for not exercising? What is your motivation to start (or to continue if you do regularly)?

  1. I am like you with two young children and find it hard to exercise. I do feel better when I do and need to make it and several other things a priority! Thanks for sharing!

  2. Yikes...that's a lot to have on your shoulders. Good for you, that you're recognizing how important it is to exercise; and that your reasons, however un-glamorous, are reasons all the same. Have you ever thought about taking a dance class? That's what keeps me going...but one step at a time, friend...

  3. Oh, yes, the exercise has definitely gone out the window for me. It always seems like there is something else that takes my attention away. Great that you have a membership to a gym! I have been trying to do some more exercise, but I find it easier to control what I am eating lately...ie less take out and more salads :-)

  4. I've fallen out of practice again, but I have found that I can work out at home (my four are 6 month to almost 6 years) to you tube videos. We don't even use the church nursery, to the child care at a gym is out. It is nice to have the opportunity to do it at home, and yet still have the instruction. I start here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndVjwkaLGDk) as it's simple!

    My husband and I just started Insanity. I think it's helpful to have a workout buddy, and I love that I can do it at home, and press pause if my baby needs me.

  8. Go Beth! I'm so proud of you for hitting the gym again :) I really need to start working out again. You're right, we do have a lot of valid excuses, but we're happier when we work out. Great post!

  10. I was doing well for almost 2 months. My husband and I were doing the insanity workouts. Then hubby went back to work after being laid off and we haven't exercised again! I really need to get back on track.

  11. I try to go to the gym at least 2-3x a week. Initially, I was motivated by the need/desire to lose the baby weight. BUT, once I started going, I realized - I GOT TIME TO MYSELF!!! It was so nice to have that time away from my little guy to listen to music, flip through a magazine as I'm on the bike, etc. I have one friend who would put her daughter in the daycare and then just go in the gym room and read! Obviously, that's not your point, but when I don't want to go, i think of my options - get a bit of time on my own while someone else watches the kid, or hang out at home entertaining him myself. ha! Most days, it's an easy choice. It did a few weeks for him to get comfortable with the daycare, but now he doesn't mind staying there for an hour or more. It's so nice...

    1. You are exactly right. I'm really enjoying it! And I think it's fun for my two year old to have other kids to play with for a bit :)

  12. Beth, if you're interested we could walk with the kids together. I don't have a jogging stroller, but we could walk together and wear the little babies.
